Why Study Accounting in Italy?

If you are looking to study in Italy, we are here to help you make an informed choice. Given below are the reasons why studying accounting from Italy can be a great choice for you:

  • You can explore different areas of accounting. If you like working with numbers, there is more to this field than just maintaining financial records. You may study auditing, taxation, financial reporting and finance too. As you go through the course, you’ll get a better idea of which area interests you.
  • You can apply after Class 12. Some students think they need to complete their graduation in India before going abroad, but that’s not the case. You can explore bachelor’s courses in Economics and Business in Italy. If you’ve already graduated, you can look at master’s programmes related to Accounting and Auditing.
  • Accounting is needed in different types of businesses. Think about a company planning to open another branch. Before making that decision, it needs to know how much money it can spend, what its profits look like and whether the expansion makes financial sense. Someone has to look at all these numbers. That’s one reason accounting knowledge is useful across industries.
  • There are public universities you can explore. You don’t have to limit your search to one city. Universities in Rome, Turin and Florence have courses in business, economics and related fields. Compare the subjects and fees before deciding.
  • You can find English-taught courses too. This is helpful if you haven’t learnt Italian, but do check the language of the actual programme. Some courses are taught in English, while others are in Italian. And if you’re planning to work in Italy after completing your degree, learning Italian can be useful, especially for jobs involving local clients and financial documents.
  • What can you do after the course? You could explore accounting, auditing, taxation, financial reporting or management accounting, depending on your qualification and experience. For example, if you enjoy checking financial records and finding errors, auditing may interest you more than other areas. You don’t have to decide your exact career right now, but it helps to know what options are available.
  • Scholarships. University fees can look a little worrying at first, so see whether you’re eligible for any scholarships or regional financial assistance. Some schemes may ask for income-related documents, while others follow different criteria. We would suggest checking these options early, rather than waiting until you’ve already started the admission process.

Eligibility Criteria to Study Accounting in Italy

Before you start applying to study in Italy, let’s look at what you’ll need to be eligible for accounting courses in Italy. The requirements aren’t exactly the same at every university, so we usually suggest checking the course details before making your shortlist:

Criteria to Study Accounting in Italy (Bachelor’s)

  • Educational Requirements: If you’ve completed Class 12, you can start looking at bachelor’s courses in accounting or related subjects. Now, don’t assume that every university asks for 70% marks. TOLC-E is required for certain courses.
  • English Proficiency Requirements: Planning to study in English? You may need to show proof of your English language skills. IELTS and TOEFL are among the tests accepted by some universities, while others may accept different forms of proof.

Criteria to Study Accounting in Italy (Master’s)

  • Educational Requirements: For a master’s degree, you’ll need a recognised bachelor’s qualification. Some accounting programmes may expect you to have studied Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related subject during graduation.
  • English Proficiency Requirements: If the course is taught in English, the university may ask for an IELTS, TOEFL or another accepted English proficiency certificate. The required score depends on the programme. Check whether the university accepts a Medium of Instruction certificate as well.

Admission Process to Study Accounting Italy

The general admission process to get into one of the best universities in Italy is simple and easy to navigate. Let us help you understand the admission details here:

  • Browse through all the courses at universities in Italy. Now you can narrow down your programme choices depending upon your academic merits, interests, and eligibility.
  • Once the courses are shortlisted, you can start filling out the forms accurately. Ensure that you submit these application forms before the deadline approaches.
  • Meanwhile, you can gather all the supplementary documents, such as a bachelor’s certificate, an income certificate, and so on, to be submitted at the time of admission.
  • Some universities require entrance tests and language tests, while others follow a different selection process. TOLC-E may be relevant for certain bachelor’s programmes, but it is not compulsory for every accounting course. Master’s applicants may also be asked to take a test or attend an interview, depending on the university.
  • After receiving an admission offer, follow the university’s instructions. If you’re a non-EU student applying from India, pre-enrolment through Universitaly may be required, depending on your programme and circumstances.
  • Check the current visa requirements with the relevant Italian consular authorities and prepare the required documents. Don’t assume that visa processing will always take 45 days so apply well in advance of your course start date.
  • Depending on your academic qualifications and the university’s rules, you may need an apostille, translated documents, a Declaration of Value (DoV) or CIMEA documentation. Not every student needs all these documents, so confirm what applies to you before proceeding.
  • Once your admission and travel plans are clearer, start looking for comfortable accommodation within your budget.

Things to Remember

  • If you are planning to study Accounting in Italy, don’t start by looking at university rankings alone. First, see what the course actually covers. We come across programmes listed under Economics and Business or Finance that include accounting subjects, so you may need to look beyond the course title to find the right option.
  • There isn’t one percentage requirement for every university. Your Class 12 marks, the subjects you studied and the admission rules of the university will all matter. If you’re applying for a master’s in Italy, your graduation subjects become important too.
  • Now, what about English-taught courses? You can look for these, but don’t forget to check the language requirement for each university. And if you are hoping to work in Italy after your studies, learning Italian can make everyday life easier.
  • We would also advise you to work out your budget before choosing a city. Tuition is only one part of the expense. Rent, food, transport and other living costs need to be included as well.
  • Scholarships in Italy can help, but don’t assume you’ll receive one until you have checked the eligibility conditions and application deadlines.
  • If you are interested in accounting or finance roles, look at the subjects, practical learning opportunities and career opportunities offered by the programme.

Conclusion

If you are thinking about studying Accounting in Italy, we would suggest that you first understand what kind of work you want to do in the future. You don't have to have everything figured out in Class 10, of course. But as you move towards Class 12, it helps to explore courses in Accounting, Finance and Economics and see which one suits you better. We can then look at Italian universities, their entry requirements, tuition fees and available scholarships. One thing we always tell students is not to choose a university just because the fees look affordable. Check the course subjects, the language of teaching and what you can do after graduation. These little details make a difference when you are planning to study abroad.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

When there are plenty of vocational courses in Accounting, why should I invest in studying Accounting in Italy? +
✓

See, vocational courses and a university degree are not quite the same thing. A vocational course may teach you specific accounting skills, which is useful, but a university degree gives you the chance to study accounting along with finance, business and other related subjects. You also get a recognised academic qualification. So if you're thinking about further studies or want to explore different career options later, a university degree is worth looking at.

Can I study Accounting in Italy after Class 12? +
✓

Yes, absolutely. You can start looking at bachelor's courses after Class 12 in Italy and there's no need to first complete your graduation in India. One thing, though. Don't search only for courses with the exact name Accounting. Some universities offer accounting subjects through Economics and Business programmes. Have a look at those options too, and see which subjects you will actually be studying.

Can I study Accounting in Italy after graduation? +
✓

Of course, you can look at master's programmes after completing your bachelor's degree. Accounting, Auditing, Finance and related subjects are all worth exploring. For example, the University of Florence offers a master's programme in Accounting, Auditing and Control. Now, if your bachelor's degree is in a completely different subject, check the entry requirements before applying. Some courses expect you to have studied relevant subjects during graduation, so this part needs a little attention.

Do I need 70% or 75% marks to study Accounting in Italy? +
✓

Not necessarily. We often come across students who worry that they haven't scored 75% and therefore cannot apply to Italy. But there isn't one fixed percentage requirement for every university. What matters is the admission criteria of the course you're choosing. Some universities may look at your academic marks, while certain programmes also have entrance tests or other selection requirements. So please don't reject yourself before even checking the options available to you.

Can I study Accounting in Italy in English? +
✓

Yes, there are accounting, finance and business-related courses taught in English. This is helpful for students who haven't learnt Italian, especially when they're planning to study abroad for the first time. You may need to submit an IELTS, TOEFL or another accepted English proficiency certificate, depending on the university. And here's something worth thinking about, if you plan to work in Italy after your degree, learning Italian can be useful. You might be comfortable studying in English, but dealing with local clients or financial documents can be a different matter.

Which universities should I look at for Accounting in Italy? +
✓

You can start by exploring Sapienza University of Rome, the University of Turin, the University of Rome Tor Vergata and the University of Florence. These universities in Italy have courses in areas related to accounting, economics and business. But don't make your decision just by looking at the university name. Have a look at the actual subjects, the language in which the course is taught and the fees. A programme called Economics or Business may include accounting subjects, so it's worth checking the curriculum before you cross it off your list.

How much does it cost to study Accounting in Italy? +
✓

This is something you should check quite early, because the fees are not the same at every university. Some public universities in Italy calculate fees based on specific financial criteria, while others follow a different fee structure. The course you choose can also make a difference. And remember, the tuition fee is not your only expense. You'll need money for accommodation, food, transport and everyday things as well. We suggest making a rough budget before finalising the university. It gives you a much clearer picture of what you can manage.

Are scholarships available for Accounting students in Italy? +
✓

Yes, scholarship options are worth exploring. Some universities and regional authorities offer financial assistance to eligible students. Certain schemes consider family income, while others may be based on academic performance or have additional conditions. One thing we tell students is, don't wait until you've received an admission offer to start checking scholarships. Look at the options while you're shortlisting universities itself. You may need to arrange income documents or submit a separate application. And please keep a backup budget, because applying for a scholarship doesn't mean the funding is confirmed.

Do I need to take TOLC-E to study Accounting in Italy? +
✓

Not for every course. TOLC-E is used by some universities for admission to bachelor's programmes in Economics and Business, but it isn't a compulsory entrance test for every accounting programme in Italy. So before you start preparing for it, check the admission requirements of your chosen university. You don't want to spend time preparing for a test that your course doesn't require, right? Start with the university's official admission information and then plan your preparation accordingly.
