If you have received admission from an Italian university, you have already crossed an important hurdle. But admission is not the same thing as getting your visa. This is where many Indian students start getting confused. They have the admission letter, then someone tells them about Universitaly. Someone else talks about bank statements. Then there is accommodation, insurance, apostille, VFS, the visa appointment and suddenly the process looks much more complicated than it actually is.
The Italy student visa process has several steps, but they need to happen in the right order.
If you are an Indian student planning to study in Italy, this guide will help you understand what happens after admission, what documents you need, how financial proof works and what you should be careful about while preparing your application.
Do Indian students need a visa to study in Italy?
Yes. If you are an Indian citizen and your study programme in Italy lasts more than 90 days, you will need a National D Study Visa. For a course lasting less than 90 days, a short-stay C visa may apply, depending on the purpose and circumstances of your study.
For most Indian students going to Italy for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, the D visa is the one you will be dealing with. The Italian authorities specifically require non-EU students who need a visa to apply through the competent Italian Embassy or Consulate for their jurisdiction.
And there is something worth understanding here.
Your university admission does not automatically mean your visa will be approved.
The university evaluates your admission. The final decision on the study visa belongs to the competent Italian diplomatic or consular authority. Universitaly itself also makes this distinction very clearly.
What happens after you get admission to an Italian university?
The process usually looks like this:
- Admission
- Universitaly pre-enrolment
- Visa application
- Travel to Italy
- Residence permit
The first three stages are the ones Indian students preparing to leave for Italy usually focus on.
1. Get your university admission
You first need to apply to an Italian higher education institution and receive admission to your chosen programme. Don’t assume every Italian university follows the same process. Universities can have different admission requirements, deadlines and fees. This is also why we advise students not to choose a university simply because another student got admission there. Your academic background, course choice and future plans matter.
2. Complete your Universitaly pre-enrolment
Once you have your admission, the next important step is the Universitaly pre-enrolment process. Universitaly is the official portal used for the pre-enrolment procedure for international students. You create your application online and upload the documents required for your chosen programme. Your Italian university then reviews and validates the relevant information. For students who require a visa, this stage is important because the university’s validation supports the subsequent visa application.
One mistake we see is students treating Universitaly as just another form to fill in. It isn’t something you should rush through without checking the information. Your university, course and personal details need to be correct.
3. Apply for your Italy student visa
Once the relevant pre-enrolment process has been completed and your university has provided the required validation/documentation, you can proceed with your visa application through the competent Italian diplomatic mission and the applicable visa application process in India.
The Italian authorities are very clear that university validation does not guarantee visa issuance. That’s an important distinction to keep in mind throughout the process.
Italy Student Visa Requirements for Indian Students
The exact checklist can depend on your course, jurisdiction and circumstances, so don’t blindly copy the documents from a friend who applied last year. For a typical long-term university study visa, you should expect the application to involve documents relating to:
- Passport
- Visa application form
- University admission
- Universitaly pre-enrolment
- Previous education
- Financial support
- Accommodation
- Health insurance
- Photographs and other application documents
- Additional documents required by the relevant Italian authority
The current India study-visa checklist also asks for a statement of purpose/cover letter, generally limited to one page, explaining the choice of course and institution, financial support, scholarship if applicable and intended accommodation.
That is worth taking seriously. Your cover letter shouldn’t be a dramatic essay about why you have dreamed about Italy since childhood. It should make sense. Why this course? Why this university? How are you funding yourself? Where are you planning to stay? Keep the explanation consistent with the rest of your application.
Academic documents for the Italy student visa
Your educational documents are an important part of the file. For fresh admissions, the current India checklist can require the final degree or school certificate and transcript/marksheet, with the specified attestation and apostille requirements. It can also require a CIMEA document or Declaration of Value, where required by the Italian higher education institution.
Do not leave document authentication until the week of your visa appointment. If your documents need additional processing, you don’t want your entire visa timeline depending on one certificate being completed at the last minute.
Also check the latest checklist for your jurisdiction. Requirements can be updated. For example, VFS published an August 2026 notice for the West jurisdiction reminding student applicants about apostille requirements for educational certificates/certified copies.
Financial Proof and Blocked Account
This is another question students ask because they have heard about blocked accounts in Germany. Don’t automatically apply the German process to Italy. The Italian student-visa process requires you to demonstrate adequate financial means of at least €10,179.85, and the current India checklist specifies the forms of financial evidence it expects.
So before opening any account because somebody told you it is mandatory, check the current Italian requirements for your application.
Also, do not suddenly transfer a large amount of money into an account and assume the problem is solved. The authorities can look at the financial background behind the money. The objective is not to manufacture a bank balance.
Accommodation and Health Insurance
You also need to show that you have thought about where you will live in Italy. Your accommodation evidence should match your actual plans. This may involve university accommodation or another acceptable arrangement, depending on your circumstances and the requirements applicable to your application. The current study-visa checklist also asks students to address their intended accommodation in the statement of purpose. Do not leave this until the last minute. Finding affordable student accommodation in some Italian cities can take time.
You will also need appropriate health insurance for Italian visa application. The current India checklist specifies the applicable medical-insurance requirements, so check those requirements before purchasing a policy.
Don’t choose insurance simply because it is the cheapest option. The policy needs to satisfy the visa requirements.
Where Do Indian Students Apply for an Italy Student Visa?
This depends on your jurisdiction in India. Italian visa applications are handled according to the relevant Italian diplomatic jurisdiction, and VFS Global is the official partner of the Embassy of Italy and Italian Consulates General in India for visa applications.
For example, residents of New Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh fall under the Embassy of Italy in New Delhi jurisdiction according to the current VFS information.
So if you live in Haryana, for example, don’t choose a centre simply because you found an appointment there. Check your jurisdiction first. The visa application has to go through the appropriate process for your place of residence.
Italy Student Visa Appointment
Once your documents are ready, you need to follow the applicable appointment process. VFS Global currently provides the India-specific process for identifying the visa type, checking the relevant documents, booking an appointment and finding the appropriate centre.
Appointments can become a source of stress, particularly around popular student intakes.
This is another reason we don’t recommend leaving the entire visa preparation until the last few weeks.
Your university deadline, Universitaly process, document preparation and visa appointment all need to fit together.
Italy Student Visa Deadline for Indian Students
For the 2026/27 academic year, the official Universitaly procedures state that visa applications for ordinary degree programmes including Bachelor’s, Master’s and single-cycle degree programmes must be submitted by 30 November 2026.
However, this should not be interpreted as meaning every student can safely wait until 30 November.
Italian universities can set earlier deadlines based on their individual courses and academic calendars. The official procedures specifically note that institutions may require visa applications earlier than the general deadline.
For other programme types, such as certain Master’s programmes, PhDs, Erasmus programmes, individual courses and foundation courses, different timing provisions apply, and the visa application cannot be submitted after the beginning of the teaching activities.
So your university’s deadline matters just as much as the general national deadline.
How Long Does an Italy Student Visa Take?
There isn’t one processing time that we can responsibly promise to every student. It can depend on the application, the competent authority, document completeness and the volume of applications being processed.
If your course starts on a particular date, work backwards.
Give yourself time for:
- Document preparation
- Apostille/attestation where required
- Universitaly
- Visa appointment
- Visa processing
- Travel arrangements
You don’t want your flight booked for Monday while your passport is still with the visa authorities.
Common Italy Student Visa Mistakes
Choosing a university first and thinking about the visa later
Your visa preparation should begin as part of your overall admission planning. Course, university, finances and accommodation all become relevant later.
Showing money without being able to explain it
A bank statement is not the whole financial story. The source of funds matters.
Using an old checklist
This is one of the easiest mistakes to avoid. Visa requirements can change. A checklist your friend used for the 2024 intake may not be the checklist you should use in 2026.
Getting confused between Italy and other European countries
Germany has its own student visa process, France has its own process and Italy has its own process. Don’t assume that because something was required for a friend’s German visa, it automatically applies to Italy.
Waiting for the admission letter
You cannot submit a complete visa application before the relevant stages are ready, but that doesn’t mean you should start preparing from zero after admission. Documents such as educational records and financial evidence may take time to organise.
Treating admission as a visa guarantee
This is perhaps the biggest misunderstanding. Your university can accept you. The Italian diplomatic authority still makes the visa decision.
What Happens After You Reach Italy?
Getting your visa is not the end of the process. If you enter Italy on a Type D national study visa for university enrolment, you must apply for the relevant Permesso di soggiorno (residence permit).
Universitaly currently states that students entering Italy on this type of visa should request the permit of stay within eight working days of arrival.
So when you make your pre-departure checklist, don’t stop at: “Visa approved.” There are still formalities waiting for you once you land.
