FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the duration of a Bachelor’s degree in Italy? +
✓

Usually, a Bachelor’s degree in Italy is completed in 3 years. This is the normal duration for many undergraduate courses. But there are exceptions, so don’t take 3 years as a rule for every course. Some programmes can take 5 years, while certain professional courses may take 6 years. If you already know the subject you want to study, check the duration of that particular course. It is better to know this before applying rather than finding out later that the course structure is different.

Can I study Bachelor’s in Italy after Class 12? +
✓

Yes, you can. If you have completed Class 12 from a recognised board, you can apply for a Bachelor’s programme in Italy, provided you meet the requirements of the university and course. Your Class 12 subjects can also be important. A student applying for engineering, for example, may need Mathematics and other relevant subjects. So don’t only ask, “Can I go after 12th?” Check whether your particular Class 12 background matches the course you want. That is what really matters.

What percentage is required for Bachelor’s in Italy? +
✓

There is no one percentage that we can give you and say, “This is the Italy cut-off.” It doesn’t work like that. The marks required can vary according to the university and the course. Having around 60–70% or above is generally a reasonable range to target, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed requirement. If your percentage is lower, don’t immediately think you cannot study in Italy. Look at the actual university requirements first. Your course choice makes a difference here.

Do I need IELTS to study Bachelor’s in Italy? +
✓

If you are applying for a Bachelor’s course taught in English, you may need to provide proof of English proficiency. IELTS is one of the commonly accepted tests, but some universities may accept TOEFL, PTE or other forms of proof as well. There is no single IELTS score for all Italian universities. One university may ask for a particular score while another may have a different requirement. So before you register for an English test, check the requirements of the universities you are actually planning to apply to.

Are Bachelor’s courses available in English? +
✓

Yes, you can find Bachelor’s programmes taught in English in Italy. You will also find many courses where Italian is the language of teaching. The number of English-taught options depends on the subject. This is something students should check quite early because you don’t want to shortlist a course and then realise the programme is taught in Italian. If you are looking for an English-taught degree, check the language of instruction on the university’s official course page before you start the application.

Do I need an entrance exam? +
✓

Not for every course. Some Italian universities have an entrance test, while other courses may follow a different admission process. It really depends on what you want to study. Certain programmes can also have limited seats, which means the admission process may be more competitive. So if someone tells you, “Italy has no entrance exam,” don’t take that as a blanket statement. Check your particular course. The university website will normally tell you whether a test is required, what it covers and when it is conducted.

How much does a Bachelor’s cost in Italy? +
✓

For many public universities, tuition fees can be around €1,000–€5,000 per year, but this is only a broad idea. The actual amount depends on the university, the course and its fee structure. Some students may pay less or more than this range. Private universities in Italy are generally more expensive. Also, tuition is not the only expense you need to calculate. Accommodation, food, transport, insurance and other daily costs can add up, so look at the complete budget rather than just the university fee.

Can I get a scholarship in Italy? +
✓

Yes, you can. There are regional scholarships, university scholarships and tuition fee waivers for international students, so Indian students can also apply. But here, I would suggest you don’t decide your university only because you have seen a big scholarship amount somewhere online. First check what you are actually eligible for. The scholarship rules, amount and benefits can be different depending on the region and university. Also, in many cases, you have to apply for the scholarship separately after or alongside your university application.

Can I work while studying in Italy? +
✓

Yes, international students can work up to 20 hours a week with a valid study residence permit, subject to the applicable rules. But there is a practical side to this which students sometimes overlook. You are going to Italy to study, and your course will take up a good amount of your time. So don’t make a plan where your whole monthly budget depends on part-time work. You may be able to earn something towards your expenses, but you should have enough funds to manage yourself without depending completely on that income.

How much does it cost to live in Italy as a student? +
✓

A student can roughly plan for €700–€1,200 per month towards living expenses, but your actual spending can be quite different. The city makes a big difference. Accommodation in a larger city can take up a major part of your monthly budget, while smaller cities may be more manageable. Then you have food, local transport, phone bills and your personal expenses. So when comparing universities, don’t look at the tuition fee alone. Check the cost of living in that particular city too.
